Going on Hiatus

I appreciate the thousands of you who have come to this blog to view the photos of Kate and read my comments. However, at this time, I am going to take a break from blogging about Princess Catherine's sartorial choices. While I love blogging, and I love fashion, and I love looking at what Kate is wearing, the truth is I don't have the time to put into this that I wish I did. And the other truth is there are other blogs out there doing a better job of this than I ever could.

So thank you for visiting. If you would like to "follow" this blog, you will be informed when/if I resume posting.

Kate in Yellowknife in a Cream Dress II

Here's a better picture.
Looks like linen, structural interest in the shoulders. Here's a link to view it, it's by Malene Birger, a Danish designer, and it's called the Bullet Dress. No adornment or jewelry, just a sage colored waistband. Nude pumps.
Early verdict: B I like the shape of the dress, I like the fabric, but please Kate, can't you put on a necklace or bracelet or scarf or brooch? Please? Pretty please?

Kate in Yellowknife in a Cream Dress

There will be better pictures soon. Here's the first good one I found. A cream dress, plain lines, cream accessories, hair down. The waistband looks to be a sage color, but I can't confirm that yet. (image courtesy REUTERS/Phil Noble).

Kate and Wills in Yellowknife

Kate has made good use of her trusty navy blue trenchcoat the last couple of days. There's been a bit of rain, both in PEI and Yellowknife. On Monday, she paired it with navy skinny jeans and boat shoes (practical for the DragonBoat race she took part in later) and a red pashmina scarf.

Then for her arrival in Yellowknife, she wore it again, with the navy heels we've seen a few times.

The trenchcoat is a Ted Baker navy Jinan trench coat.
Doesn't navy seem to be the predominant color of this tour?

Verdict: I'm going with Straight A's on this. The weather is a little foul, the trench appears practical and pretty, and the red scarf is an awesome accessory!

Kate Middlteon Visits Anne of Green Gables

July 4, 2011
On July 4, 2011 Prince William and Princess Catherine visited Prince Edward Island, the setting for Kate's favorite book from childhood, the novel "Anne of Green Gables". Kate looked adorable in a cream colored dress by Sarah Burton (who designed Kate's wedding dress). She wore the navy blue pumps we last saw as she was boarding the plane for Canada several days ago. Also in evidence were her sapphire earrings. And her hair was pulled back in a cute ponytail, so we got a good look at the earrings!

Verdict: A. I love this outfit. It has a slightly maritime feeling, a slightly retro feeling, and is perfect for the location and setting. It emphasizes (once again) how thin Kate is, and there was a slight issue with the skirt flying up in the wind and exposing too much. I remember reading that Princess Diana used to have tiny weights sewn into the hems of her lightweight skirts, to avoid just this kind of problem.

What's your verdict?

Kate Middleton in Quebec City and P.E.I.

On July 3, Princess Catherine and Prince William visited Quebec City and Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island) in Canada. Kate's dress is by Joseph, and it's called the Vanessa. $212 if you can find it, it's sold out at ShopBop.
Later in the day, she changed her shoes and added a little pastel jacket with a Chanel-like flair.

Verdict: B+ . Sometimes plain vanilla looks good. But just think what a little belt would have done for this outfit...

Kate Middleton in "La Belle Province" Quebec

July 3, 2011
William and Kate visited Quebec today, and took part in a prayer ceremony.
Kate chose a blue dress by Erdem, from the Pre-Fall 2011 Collection. Her accessories included the nude L.K. Bennett heels and (I believe) her nude/beige clutch. Hey, when in doubt, go with beige, right?

Looks like she's also wearing the "Camilla charm" bracelet, and can't tell about her earrings yet.

In my opinion, this dress is just a little too sexy for a morning prayer service. It's very pretty, but when the Duchess sits, half her thigh is exposed, no matter how primly she poises on a chair.

Verdict so far: B (points for color, points off for slight inappropriateness)

Kate Middleton Plants a Tree July 2, 2011

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out of Rideau Hall to plant a tree wearing a grey Kensington dress by Catherine Walker. The dress was very fitted, with a v-neck in front and back, and an elegantly cut collar. She accessorized with a Hobbs clutch and Tabitha Simmons heels. Earrings were the Hope Egg Earrings (teardrop dangle sterling silver with pave set white topaz) - the same ones worn in the offical engagement photos by Mario Testino.

I like this dress, but it's very simple and plain. I would have loved to see a pearl necklace, or some bright bangle bracelets to jazz the look up just a little. Kate needs to remember that she's not just dressing to keep warm, but to represent Queen and country. Thousands of people turn out on a royal tour just to get a glimpse of the Duchess, and to give them a little bling -- it doesn't have to be expensive, just slightly eye-catching -- is not immodest, but called for.

Verdict: B

Kate Middleton at the Canada Day Evening Concert

July 1, 2011
Purple Issa, black Prada shoes, black silk Anya Hindmarch 'Maud' clutch, maple leaf brooch, hair up! Love the earrings, look like diamond danglers. The dress is very similar to the royal blue one she wore for her official engagement announcement. The color is beautiful, very rich and vibrant, and shows off the diamond brooch magnificently. I also appreciate that she wore her hair up so it doesn't obscure the brooch. Or the earrings.

Verdict: A.

Kate Middleton does Canada Day 2011

Happy Canada Day, Canada!
Princess Catherine showed up in her white Reiss dress - the one she wore for her iconic official engagement portrait, shot by Mario Testino. At least the hat was new, a structured fascinator in "Canada Red", complete with maple leaves. A little cartoonish, but cute. Red court shoes, a maple leaf brooch and the gold medallion necklace (worn last night also) completed the outfit. The only odd touch was the Asian-inspired Anya Hindmarch clutch, complete with gold tassel. Maybe, just maybe, it was a nod to the large Asian population in Canada. If so, then that's good. But if she grabbed it just because it was red, then I say it's a touch bizarre and doesn't go with the rest of the outfit.
VERDICT: A - (the minus sign is for the bag).

Currently listed as "out of stock" on Hindmarch's website.

Kate Middleton in Ottawa June 30, 2011

The final look of the Issa "London Bird" dress from Kate's pre-wedding days. Gold leaf earrings, gold necklace, trusty wedge shoes. I do like Kate's hair done this way, it's the best of both worlds - off her face, carefully controlled, yet still long and shiny. The dress was most recently seen in London, paired with a cream jacket and the same shoes.

VERDICT: A. I like this look, I like that for her third outfit of the day, Kate chose something we've seen before. It makes her look not-extravagant. It's casual, fun, and perfect for a barbecue.

Kate Middleton Arrives In Ottawa

images from The Telegraph Online

BBC tweeted the arrival picture of William and Kate arriving in Canada. Kate is wearing Canadian designer Erdem Moralioglu, a very tight fitting navy lace dress, with her nude L.K. Bennett heels. I believe she's wearing her diamond and sapphire cabuchon dangle earrings.

My verdict... I give Kate a B. My main quibble is with the beige accessories. Why not keep with the navy shoes and bag she got on the plane with? And it's nice that she went with a Canadian designer, but there's just something that bothers me a little about the lace. It hit a slightly wrong note for me, maybe it's just a tad frivolous for a wreath laying ceremony. What grade do you give her?

Kate Middleton Goes to Canada

The Trip to Canada: Day One

June 30, 2011. The Duchess of Cambridge arrives at the airport to board a plane for Canada. This will be the first official overseas trip for Kate and Wills, and Kate is said to have packed 40 different outfit changes, so this should be a fun trip. Let's hope not everything is as boring as this outfit! A navy blue sheath dress by French designer Roland Mouret with a navy blazer by Toronto-based Smythe les Vestes. The only adornment is a few brass buttons on the blazer. No visible jewelry. Navy Manolo Blahnik Calogera stilettos. $1400 Mulberry handbag.

VERDICT: Flight attendant chic. Boring. Safe. But can she really sit down in that dress? When I fly, I wear something loose and comfy.

Tennis Whites! Kate Middleton at Wimbledon June 27, 2011

Prince William and his bride, Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, showed up in the Royal Box at Wimbledon on June 27, 2011, to watch Scotsman Andy Murray play tennis. Kate wore a Temperly Moriah Dress, seemingly tennis-inspired, in all white, with layers and cut-out style straps. According to the website cSee the dress is 98% polyester and 2% Elastane, with a silk lining.

(image from Daily Mail)

Her heels were the nude L.K. Bennett court shoes, recently worn to the Epsom Derby.

And I'm pretty sure she's wearing the sapphire-and-diamond earrings that came from Diana's collection, most recently worn at Prince Phillip's 90th birthday service.

MY OPINION: The shoes and earrings make this outfit a little too formal for a sporting event. I would have loved to see a pair of white strappy low-heeled sandals, and maybe some fun, casual earrings.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, Gives Medals to Irish Guards June 25, 2011

In her last royal engagement before the couple leaves for their Great Canadian Tour, Kate joined her husband Prince William, in handing out medals and reviewing the Irish Guards.

She wore a navy military inspired coat, complete with epaulets and brass buttons. The coat is likely an Alexander McQueen design. Her jewelry included a gold shamrock brooch and a little bracelet with a charm that had a C on it. I've read in numerous places that the Irish guards brooch used to belong to the late Queen Mother. The beret is likely a Rachel Trevor-Morgan creation.

Generally I like this outfit, generally she looks great, typically Kate -- modest, appropriate, attractive...but because I'm a little cranky this morning, I'm going to pick it apart. First of all, as skinny as Kate is, the coat still looks a little tight on her. I mean, really, if she's a size 0, that coat must be a size negative 2! Second, am I wrong in thinking the hat isn't *quite* right for the coat? And remember when Princess Diana wore a military inspired suit to a review? She got skewered for it! But perhaps she was just ahead of her time...

UPDATE: That shamrock brooch appears to be the same one Princess Anne wore in March 2009, celebrating St Patrick's Day with the Irish Guards at Windsor's Victoria Barracks. (image courtesy Hello Magazine). Do you think it's the same brooch?

Catherine at Prince Philip's 90th Birthday Party June 13, 2011

Dinner at The Waterside Inn, at Bray, Berkshire
Finally some color! And it comes on a really quite awful looking Stella McCartney dress, circa 2008. We saw this dress on Madonna three years ago, and I didn't like it then. It hangs strangely, it's wrinkly and I'm sorry, it looks kinda cheap. Kate wears her black pumps with it, and I'll try to find out about the earrings if I can.

Duchess of Cambridge expected to fuel sales of Nivea face cream

Duchess of Cambridge expected to fuel sales of £5 face creamThe 29-year-old’s beauty secret was revealed to be a tub of Nivea moisturiser costing just £5.10 which she was seen buying just hours before appearing at a star-studded gala charity dinner.
An onlooker saw the Duchess pop into the popular chemist on the King’s Road in Chelsea, west London on Thursday, where she bought Nivea Visage Pure and Natural Moisturising Day Cream. Link...

Kate Middleton on Garter Day June 13, 2011

Everyone's looking at Kate!

After yesterday's lovely soft blue outfit, Kate has reverted to her favorite neutrals for the Garter Day ceremony. Dove grey, with a dove grey hat, her diamond studs, and grey suede (?) heels. I'll track down designer info when I get home.

UPDATE: OK the coat is from Katherine Hooker's 2011 Summer Collection, the hat is Phillip Treacy, no info yet on the shoes, dress or necklace.

Catherine at Prince Philip's 90th birthday service

Kate Middleton at Prince Philip's Birthday Service, June 12, 2011

What's exciting about this picture? Is it that Kate is wearing a lovely periwinkle coat she's worn in the past? Is it that she's wearing a darling new hat? Is it that she looks awesome? Nope, none of those things. What's exciting is that she appears to be wearing Princess Diana's sapphire earrings. Not 100% sure but it seems likely.

I hope to see her in some more of Diana's diamonds, pearls, emeralds and rubies as time goes on!

Later that Same Day....

Following the Trooping of Colors, Kate showed up sans the McQueen coat, at the wedding of jockey Sam Waley-Cohen and party organiser Bella Ballin. The question is, is this the dress she was wearing beneath the ivory coat? Or did she somehow find a minute to change? She's wearing the same hat as earlier in the day, so I suspect she just ditched the jacket.

We saw this dress a few years ago, with a black cardigan and different belt.

Kate Middleton at Trooping the Colour June 10, 2011

Trooping the Colour

Kate attended her first Trooping the Color ceremony as Duchess of Cambridge, and the color of the day color. She chose a white (ivory) Alexander McQueen suit, black hat, small stud earrings, and very little added decoration. I'm trying to find a full image of the suit, which looks very interesting! The double breased jacket is constructed with unusual vertical panels that cascade down, and could really only be worn successfully by a size one!

Will post more complete images if I find them. I need to see the totality of this outfit before I can really judge it!

UPDATE: The jacket is from Alexander McQueen, $3,845, alas, no longer available.

Kate in Jenny Packham, June 9, 2011

The Duchess of Cambridge (formerly known as Kate Middleton) stepped out with the Duke (Wills, to those who know him!) tonight, attending the 10th annual Absolute Return for Kids (Ark) Gala Dinner.

Kate chose a gown from the Spring 2011 collection in palest pink with lots of feminine detailing, such as fluttery cap sleeves, sequins and crystals. It sells for $6200.

The shoes are LK Bennett, ($285) quite a perfect match, I would say.

I think she looks fabulous, the clutch is adorable, and I like her hair down. It makes the whole outfit just a bit less formal, less in-your-face-glizty, and I like that.

(video from The Telegraph)

Earlier in the day, Kate had been seen shopping in London, wearing a bright fuschia dress, black cardigan, and the black espadrille wedges we've seen her wear a lot lately (most recently, the day after her wedding). I think she looks somewhat annoyed, don't you?
