The Duchess of Cambridge: The Next Day

Back in the day, brides had "second day" dresses, and sometimes third and fourth day dresses. That sure isn't the case with Catherine, who, looking remarkably fresh (and William is too) after a long day and night of ceremony and partying, chose a very simple little blue dress for her "day after". She added one of her signature little jackets, this one in black, and a matching belt. (Good grief, she's skinny.)

And call me anti-couture, but I like the fact that she's wearing the old wedge platform shoes she's had for awhile now (we saw them last summer). She's keeping things low key, and that's kind of cool.

I'm starting to understand her fashion sensibility a little bit. What do you think?

The Duchess of Cambridge: Second Wedding Day Gown

After the wedding, Catherine went back to Clarence House to change into her second dress of the day. This one, also by Sarah Burton, is similar in shape to the wedding gown, but much simpler and barer. Beneath that unfortunate fuzzy bolero sweater (what luckless lackey had the job of brushing and beating that sweater til every hair stood up perfectly?), the dress is strapless, with a sweetheart neck and diamente detailing at the waist. And it really really emphasises how thin Kate is.

Is it vaguely reminiscent of Chelsea Clinton's Vera Wang wedding gown?

It's Sarah Burton! Catherine Middleton's Wedding Gown

It's Sarah Burton, from the house of Alexander McQueen. A great choice, a beautiful dress, I love the detailing in the back. The lace is gorgeous. The bouquet is strangely small! The tiara is gorgeous.

Does it remind anyone of Princess Grace?

Kate Goes Shopping: Part Deux

Kate Middleton hit the shops on King's Road in Chelsea for a second day, a week ahead of her wedding. The dress, according to the Daily Mail, is Issa (again). She continues to live up to her critics' contention that she's boring. Black dress - yawn. Nun shoes - double yawn. Same old leather handbag - triple yawn. No decorations or jewelry, save the sapphire ring. I won't comment on her gauntness, will leave that to you.

It just seems to me that, in her fear of getting anything "wrong", she's chosen to be completely bland. What do you think?

Kate Goes Dress Shopping: April 18, 2011

It's been reported in the Daily Mail that Kate Middleton went shopping yesterday, at a shop called Warehouse, on King’s Road, Chelsea,
and bought several hot-weather items, including these:

The Mail also either Photoshopped the "tropical bird print" dress onto a picture of Kate, or used a Kate double, to illustrate how she "might" look in this dress, which she also bought (see the Mail's image here).

All the dresses and tops are available on the Warehouse's website, but my guess is they'll all sell out in a few hours.

Now...if these are part of Kate's honeymoon trousseau, they definitely imply a warm-weather vacation spot, such as Mustique. As for the dresses themselves, they follow Kate's fashion sense in that they're feminine, pretty, and modest.

Kate's Wedding Dress Designer Revealed

The Huffington Post's Yvonne York is reporting that Kate Middleton's wedding dress will be designed by Sophie Cranston. Cranston is a young London designer, who has a label called Libélula (that's Spanish for dragonfly).
According to York, Cranston "won the Designer of the Year Award at London's Graduate Fashion Week in 1999 and then went on to hone her design skills under the tutelage of Alexander McQueen before going into business with Alice Temperley to create the Temperley label in 2000."

Cranston designed the black velvet coat that Kate wore to a wedding in January, and is also responsible for the wedding gown of Piers Morgan's bride (see image below). Her fashion sense is a little bit retro, and employs sumptuous fabrics, clean lines, and intricate details. In perusing her lookbook I was struck by the vibrant colors, use of patterns, and simplicity of cut. Many of her dresses look nearly identical, except in color or fabric, with short floaty cap sleeves, v-necks, a wrapped look, and a very simple silhouette.

There is a small display of 7 bespoke (custom made) wedding dresses on her site, none of which are suitably grand for a royal bride.

So we shall see.

Kate Middleton, April 11, 2011; Darwen, Lancashire

Kate Middleton braves the rain on a trip to Darwen, Lancashire

Kate and Prince William attended the opening of Darwen Aldridge Community Academy. Kate's navy blue suit suffered a little in the weather, looking a bit wrinkled. It's a safe - if smart and well styled - choice by Kate, in dark blue with a slight peplum flare to the structured jacket, and a slim skirt. The shoes are sturdy and boring. The cutest thing about this outfit is the purse she's carrying.
