Going on Hiatus

I appreciate the thousands of you who have come to this blog to view the photos of Kate and read my comments. However, at this time, I am going to take a break from blogging about Princess Catherine's sartorial choices. While I love blogging, and I love fashion, and I love looking at what Kate is wearing, the truth is I don't have the time to put into this that I wish I did. And the other truth is there are other blogs out there doing a better job of this than I ever could.

So thank you for visiting. If you would like to "follow" this blog, you will be informed when/if I resume posting.

Kate in Yellowknife in a Cream Dress II

Here's a better picture.
Looks like linen, structural interest in the shoulders. Here's a link to view it, it's by Malene Birger, a Danish designer, and it's called the Bullet Dress. No adornment or jewelry, just a sage colored waistband. Nude pumps.
Early verdict: B I like the shape of the dress, I like the fabric, but please Kate, can't you put on a necklace or bracelet or scarf or brooch? Please? Pretty please?

Kate in Yellowknife in a Cream Dress

There will be better pictures soon. Here's the first good one I found. A cream dress, plain lines, cream accessories, hair down. The waistband looks to be a sage color, but I can't confirm that yet. (image courtesy REUTERS/Phil Noble).

Kate and Wills in Yellowknife

Kate has made good use of her trusty navy blue trenchcoat the last couple of days. There's been a bit of rain, both in PEI and Yellowknife. On Monday, she paired it with navy skinny jeans and boat shoes (practical for the DragonBoat race she took part in later) and a red pashmina scarf.

Then for her arrival in Yellowknife, she wore it again, with the navy heels we've seen a few times.

The trenchcoat is a Ted Baker navy Jinan trench coat.
Doesn't navy seem to be the predominant color of this tour?

Verdict: I'm going with Straight A's on this. The weather is a little foul, the trench appears practical and pretty, and the red scarf is an awesome accessory!

Kate Middlteon Visits Anne of Green Gables

July 4, 2011
On July 4, 2011 Prince William and Princess Catherine visited Prince Edward Island, the setting for Kate's favorite book from childhood, the novel "Anne of Green Gables". Kate looked adorable in a cream colored dress by Sarah Burton (who designed Kate's wedding dress). She wore the navy blue pumps we last saw as she was boarding the plane for Canada several days ago. Also in evidence were her sapphire earrings. And her hair was pulled back in a cute ponytail, so we got a good look at the earrings!

Verdict: A. I love this outfit. It has a slightly maritime feeling, a slightly retro feeling, and is perfect for the location and setting. It emphasizes (once again) how thin Kate is, and there was a slight issue with the skirt flying up in the wind and exposing too much. I remember reading that Princess Diana used to have tiny weights sewn into the hems of her lightweight skirts, to avoid just this kind of problem.

What's your verdict?

Kate Middleton in Quebec City and P.E.I.

On July 3, Princess Catherine and Prince William visited Quebec City and Charlottetown (Prince Edward Island) in Canada. Kate's dress is by Joseph, and it's called the Vanessa. $212 if you can find it, it's sold out at ShopBop.
Later in the day, she changed her shoes and added a little pastel jacket with a Chanel-like flair.

Verdict: B+ . Sometimes plain vanilla looks good. But just think what a little belt would have done for this outfit...

Kate Middleton in "La Belle Province" Quebec

July 3, 2011
William and Kate visited Quebec today, and took part in a prayer ceremony.
Kate chose a blue dress by Erdem, from the Pre-Fall 2011 Collection. Her accessories included the nude L.K. Bennett heels and (I believe) her nude/beige clutch. Hey, when in doubt, go with beige, right?

Looks like she's also wearing the "Camilla charm" bracelet, and can't tell about her earrings yet.

In my opinion, this dress is just a little too sexy for a morning prayer service. It's very pretty, but when the Duchess sits, half her thigh is exposed, no matter how primly she poises on a chair.

Verdict so far: B (points for color, points off for slight inappropriateness)

Kate Middleton Plants a Tree July 2, 2011

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out of Rideau Hall to plant a tree wearing a grey Kensington dress by Catherine Walker. The dress was very fitted, with a v-neck in front and back, and an elegantly cut collar. She accessorized with a Hobbs clutch and Tabitha Simmons heels. Earrings were the Hope Egg Earrings (teardrop dangle sterling silver with pave set white topaz) - the same ones worn in the offical engagement photos by Mario Testino.

I like this dress, but it's very simple and plain. I would have loved to see a pearl necklace, or some bright bangle bracelets to jazz the look up just a little. Kate needs to remember that she's not just dressing to keep warm, but to represent Queen and country. Thousands of people turn out on a royal tour just to get a glimpse of the Duchess, and to give them a little bling -- it doesn't have to be expensive, just slightly eye-catching -- is not immodest, but called for.

Verdict: B

Kate Middleton at the Canada Day Evening Concert

July 1, 2011
Purple Issa, black Prada shoes, black silk Anya Hindmarch 'Maud' clutch, maple leaf brooch, hair up! Love the earrings, look like diamond danglers. The dress is very similar to the royal blue one she wore for her official engagement announcement. The color is beautiful, very rich and vibrant, and shows off the diamond brooch magnificently. I also appreciate that she wore her hair up so it doesn't obscure the brooch. Or the earrings.

Verdict: A.

Kate Middleton does Canada Day 2011

Happy Canada Day, Canada!
Princess Catherine showed up in her white Reiss dress - the one she wore for her iconic official engagement portrait, shot by Mario Testino. At least the hat was new, a structured fascinator in "Canada Red", complete with maple leaves. A little cartoonish, but cute. Red court shoes, a maple leaf brooch and the gold medallion necklace (worn last night also) completed the outfit. The only odd touch was the Asian-inspired Anya Hindmarch clutch, complete with gold tassel. Maybe, just maybe, it was a nod to the large Asian population in Canada. If so, then that's good. But if she grabbed it just because it was red, then I say it's a touch bizarre and doesn't go with the rest of the outfit.
VERDICT: A - (the minus sign is for the bag).

Currently listed as "out of stock" on Hindmarch's website.
