Feb 21 Kate Visits Rose Hill Primary School and The Art Room

Today Kate visited two schools in Oxford. The visit was in association with the charity Art Room, who work with children to increase self-confidence and self-esteem.

Her coat dress was -- surprise! -- in shades of brown. She paired it with brown tights and brown/grey shooties. I don't mind the silhouette. I kind of like the slightly high waist on this dress, but once again, the color is atrocious.

I'm starting to think it's time (lowers voice to a whisper) to start looking at pictures of Princess Diana in similar situations. Not to compare -- that would be wrong. But one thing we learned from Diana is that fashion can speak for us, what we wear communicates a lot about who we are. And Kate's fashion is telling me that she still doesn't quite get it.

Do you think she gets it?

By the way, the coatdress is/was also available in turquoise. I don't love it but it would have been a little more cheery than the one she wore.

Feb 14 visit to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool

The Duchess visited Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, on Valentine's Day. The coat she wore was pretty and well cut, in chocolate brown

It's a nice enough coat, but once again, there's no wow factor, no hint that this is a member of the royal family. No adornment save a thin belt, no pretty scarf or blingy brooch, no hat, no accessories except a black clutch and black shoes.

OK, well, let's see what the dress beneath looks like:

OMG. Solid black. Head to toe black. Unadorned, plain, boring to the point of shocking. C'mon, Catherine, these are sick children you're visiting. Do you not want to cheer them up a little? Is your need to blend into the background so strong that you can't put on a bright colored dress for the little ones? I'm sorry, folks, but this is really awful. I'm not saying she looks bad, I'm saying it's the wrong outfit for the occasion.

What do you think?

Catherine at the National Portrait Gallery Feb 7, 2012

Catherine visited the National Portrait Gallery in London on February 7, 2012, in her first solo engagement since Prince William left for the Falklands.
Is it too literal to wear an outfit whose only feature (besides the cute pockets) is a portrait collar? :)
Maybe not. It's a cute enough dress, and the bracelet is gorgeous. But once again, Catherine is choosing clothes that age her. This dress would be fine if she was 40 or 50. But she's barely 30. If this was a little more silvery and a little less grey I might like it. Or if she used that collar to display a little more bling around her neck.

I played around with this look in photoshop, and couldn't come up with much. I tried different colors, but nothing looked great. I did try making the collar white, and that might have worked with pearl accessories. But all in all, the look is understated to the point of kinda boring. For a princess, I mean. Catherine still doesn't quite "get" that people want to see her glammed up.
